Making Of reflection

If you look at any greatest film list, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction will surely be at the top. Often hailed as the most influential films in the modern era, it has a wide array of storylines to follow. It has a non-linear plot which is broken up by flashbacks and different storylines. The opening scene is a couple eating breakfast at a diner. They seem normal, but they talk about different robberies or “jobs” they’ve pulled off. They then kiss and start robbing the diner. The credits then roll and it flashes back to two hitmen, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, driving and talking about the differences in European fast food chains and American fast food chains. They then storm into an apartment. Jules Winnfield (played by Samuel L. Jackson) delivers some great dialogue including “English, Motherfucker, do you speak it?” and Ezekiel 25:17 “Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and goodwill, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.” They kill everyone in the apartment except for one dorky looking black teen who we later find out is named Marvin and was working with Vincent and Jules.

I think this scene is very important to the movie because it sets up how the two hitmen have good chemistry together, and are kind of like brothers. They talk in the car like best friends, and then as soon as they get out it’s all business. It also shows hows brutal they can be, this is especially shown when Jules is interrogating someone in the apartment and the man will not stop saying “what”. Jules then says “Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say, what, one more Goddamn time!” They start talking again and Jules asks him a question and the man says “what,” so Jules shoots him in the shoulder.

The non-linear plot is also a very good move by Quentin Tarantino. The movie begins with the end and ends with the beginning, the end scene wrapping all the way back to the couple robbing the diner. This turns out to be a flashback to the past and the story that is set to present time is the middle story. This story starts with a flashback of Butch being told his dad died in battle and his dads best friend giving Butch his dads watch, which becomes his most prized possession. Then it goes back to present day Butch (played by Bruce Willis) a boxer who just killed his opponent which makes Marsellus Wallace mad and he sends everyone to look for Butch. Butch’s girlfriend leaves the watch at home where Butch goes to get it to find Vincent Vega there and Butch shoots him dead. After this story it flashes back to the apartment shooting where Vincent and Jules take Marvin.

This takes us all the way to the end where Jules and Vincent go to a diner which you soon realize it is the same one from the beginning, and Jules says Ezekiel 25:17 again. He explains that he has a new outlook on this quote and the way it’s supposed to be interpreted. He lets the couple leave.

All in all, I think this was a great movie for people who enjoy action and complex storytelling. This movie has very good action scenes including a chase between Marsellus and Butch. The storytelling is very good in which it all ties in at the end and no scenes were “pointless”. I really enjoyed this movie and it will stay at the top of my list for a long time.
